carbon fiber testing

Four test panels were laid up, all using carbon fiber - 6.2oz 2x2 twill, from left to right they are: 7 layers (control-no vacuum or breather), 14 layers, 7 layers with half covered by a single layer of lighweight Kevlar (yellow in photo) and a 1/2" honeycomb skinned with two layers of carbon fiber on each side.

From top to bottom: honeycomb, 7 layer solid laminate, 14 layer solid laminate.

Just prior to turning vacuum on.

Post cure.

All samples above were ~4"x25". All were vacuum bagged and cooked (elevated temperature epoxy).

Samples are now currently at a materials lab (11/13/04-) for testing. Go to the next page to see some crude testing that illustrates the stiffness of each sample.
