Dream Astrograph - 12.5"

Owner's older son, seven years old and ~75 lbs, standing on a 3.6 pound lower truss assembly for the 12.5" Astrograph.

The section is upside down. The carbon fiber, yoke-style mirror cell will be attached on the other side of the octagonal back plate that he is standing on.

This section is half of the OTA. It is 15-9/16" OD by ~22-3/8" tall. All graphite/epoxy fabrication was done in house, including the truss tubes.

The section in the grass is the central section that connects to the top truss assembly. This has a square outer profile with a round, clear opening that is baffled. This is easier to see in the enlarged photo at the bottom of this page.

Three holes on the back plate allow air flow for high volume fans.

This assembly has also withstood a 190 lb load in the same orientation as the photo at left illustrates.

It will NEVER see these kinds of loads however as the primary mirror is conical and weighs 15.4 lbs. For this application stiffness is much more important than strength.
